Thanks a lot for this information, my mom has been dealing very serious
pain with sciatica for the past 5 days now and I hope this will help. She
hasn’t seen a chiropractor yet but she is going in 2 days, Only thing she
has been doing is lying in her bed sleeping and taking pain medication
because she can barely move without feeling pain. All the symptoms she has
described to me are exactly similar to sciatica. It’s hard seeing your mom
in this much pain so hopefully it will go away soon.
I’m an Australian physiotherapist. You are a very good communicator. And
have explained Robin McKenzie’s exercise really well. Good on you!
You hit the nail on the head between 5:00 and 5:25…when you advised
people to talk to their doctor about ‘directional preferences’.
And it’s not even a question of preference…but rather of the absolute
necessity to avoid exercises that will exacerbate a back problem. Your
recommended exercises are only of benefit for people with the SAME problem
you have, yet it seems you don’t even know for certain what caused/causes
your pain issue? Was/is it muscular, spinal, damage from posture as you
suggested, congenital or what?
For example, I have a herniated disc at L4/L5 – a very common location, it
seems – which is impinging on my spinal cord, and arching my back is the
very worst thing I could do to alleviate my ‘low back pain’. (Indeed, if I
even lie in this position for a more than a few minutes to read a book or
whatever, I’m in agony for hours afterwards.) As my physiotherapist and
neurosurgeon told me, bending forward is the best thing for me (and for
millions of fellow sufferers) – and once I was shown my MRI scan and had
spine geometry explained to me, I understood why they told me this. It’s
not rocket science to work out what spinal movement will make my pain worse.
So, anybody with my problem but unaware of it (or of where the spinal cord
is in relation to vertebral discs) will only do themselves harm by applying
this exercise. Yes, I know you have disclaimers, and good for you for
having them – but your blurb cites “a specialist in reducing the pain
associated with disc issues” – and yet your video demonstrates an exercise
of his that would only cause disc sufferers like me further damage.
Sadly, not everybody is as savvy as the next man, and not everybody can
afford to consult a back specialist (which I assume are very expensive
where you are?). I therefore suggest that you specify exactly the condition
you have, so that people can avoid doing exercises that might actually
cause them harm; and in any case point out that back arching is one of the
worst things possible for people with spinal cord lumbar disc impingment
issues.
Got pain in my lower back from picking up a heavy bag at the airport. This
time the pain did not go away by itself so I started to search for advice
on youtube. Tried the two first positions in your video this morning and
was surprised by the positive effect they had at my back. The pain is still
there but it has calmed down and I feel more flexible again. Thank you for
your advice!
Thank you, i really liked this video. Overall, copare to others, i gave you
10 out of 10.
Thought I got hurt due to weight training and bodybuilding, but now I think
its also from sitting and slouching at the computer 8 hours a day. Am
getting physical therapy and they have me doing that same exercise among a
few others and the sciatica pain instantly diminished to almost being gone.
So what you are saying is true!
Very helpful. Thanks! Will definitely read that book.
Yes very good advice.I used to get very bad siatica and lower back always
tense .My tai chi instructor started laughing and just said ly on your side
and lift lift one leg up and hold for count of ten then slowly extend of
the days and weeks. This is suppose to fix muscle imbalances (muscles
tighten to protect weaker areas) by training both sides like this you
remedy the imbalances. He also advised me not to take any anti inflammatory
medication from doctor but instead take lots of ginger either juiceing or
blending it in a smoothy with avocado and blue berries or any other kind of
berries. Final advice was to drink at least 4 pints of water a day and
avoid sugar and glutan.
Great overview of McKenzie method. I’ve suffered with disc related pain for
almost 3 years. I was blown off by doctors and physical therapists who just
went through the motions of treatment. Only because I took control of my
treatment and researched, and sought PT’s, and forced my Dr to order an MRI
did I finally arrive at McKenzie. It has been absolutely life-changing. As
an extremely active person I was devastated by the debilitating back pain
from an ‘annular tear’. My activity was severely reduced due to the pain.
And I was depressed. If you suffer from chronic back pain, don’t stop
pushing for answers. Don’t let the Dr’s who work for the insurance
companies tell you an MRI doesn’t relate to better outcomes. BS! The only
way you are going to know what is in there is to look. Give the methods in
the video a try and if they work, stick with it. Slowly progress to a place
where you can exercise again. Dont stop pushing. Thanks for the excellent
video.
If you have videos with no explanation, just follow along, I would use your
videos more. But great videos. Thanks.
You sure you’re not a doctor? :)
I have this issue since October 2013 I tried so many doctors medicines plus
herbal oils to remove that pain but it gradually increases more that after
some months I can’t even walk set lay or bend easily it shifted into my
legs specially in my left leg…for this reason Doctors told me to stop my
workout I was heavy wieght lifter in my gym but I didn’t work out for 6
months because of that pain.I’m happy to see your this video.I will try
this exercise and see what happen May be it will solve my big tension
because I’m an athlete and I can’t do rest for my whole life…Thanks May

I am a ex pro ballet dancer and i can ben my head right to my butt . Now my
sciatic nerve is killing me to the point that i can’t stand to long but if
i am in full Side splits i feel no pain at all but doing Little things such
as laundry making supper it just hurts so bad to just stand I was told I
have arthritis but it’s very small not to bad. I guess when you’re younger
you for extending the body so like i told you sitting in the side splits is
the best relaxation and I feel no pain in my lower back and i am not to old
but for a male I am very flexible. I seen what you where doing so i will
give it a try and see what will happen okay thanks
Nice video, nice guy.
I had to get surgery for a pinched nerve, fortunately I’m back to lifting
now and i kinda like that i still have some residual sciatic pain. kinda
like a reminder of what I’ve been through.
Thanks for the information.. I have been dealing with sciatica since the
beginning of 2015. It’s been very depression and I’ve been afraid I won’t
ever get back to having a healthy workout life. I’ve had two steroid shots
and some improvement but the pain comes and goes. I’m starting therapy this
week but will try the exercises.
yo… not even kidding. My back/hip pain is near gone, and I didn’t even do
a full rep. I don’t want to jinks it, but I think this technique might have
possible fixed my lower back area and I hadn’t even done a rep. I’ve been
experiencing extreme pain when bending down to put shoes on, sitting down
at my computer desk (I sit down for at least 4 hrs at my computer), pain
while driving, anything that requires me to bend my back, neck, or hip.
This has been going on since late October of last year and I keep holding
out on seeing a doctor just for ANOTHER expensive doctor bill. I want to go
back to doing my regular work outs. If this exercise really did the trick,
I’m gonna cry. I’m giving you a very early THANK YOU! +sub thumbs up +share
your exercises helped me a lot. i’m recovering from a herniated lumbar disc
